STEP 01/ Preparing the Masonry Surface

The first step to installing stone to exteriors or to interior surfaces with increased risk of water exposure is to properly prepare the surface. This video walks you through this step, from cleaning the surface to waterproofing using Laticrete’s Air and Water Barrier.

Why Waterproofing Matters

Water and ice can wreak havoc on your stone veneer, leading to issues such as:

  • Structural Damage: Water can penetrate the substrate and cause deterioration over time.
  • Aesthetics: Moisture can lead to discoloration, mold, and mildew, compromising the beauty of your stone.
  • Reduced Lifespan: Without proper waterproofing, your stone veneer may not last as long as it should.

Key Steps to Waterproofing Your Stone Veneer

  1. Prepare the Surface: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of any contaminants.
  2. Apply the Waterproofing Membrane: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product you’re using. In the case of Laticrete’s Air & Water Barrier MVIS, you’ll typically apply it with a roller or brush.
  3. Cure Time: Allow the membrane to cure completely before proceeding to the next step.
  4. Install the Stone Veneer: Once the membrane is cured, you can begin installing your stone veneer.
